My name is Hayden Shaw and i'm 3 years old, I live in Portsmouth, Hampshire and I have a condition called Cerebral Palsy, which is damage to my brain in the area that controls my movement. There are different types of Cerebral Palsy and the type I have is Spastic Diplegia, this causes the muscles in my legs to be constantly tight and the signals that my brain send my legs to be confused, this means I am unable to walk independantly.
There is a Doctor in America who performs life changing operations on children like myself, that will release the muscles in my legs and will hopefully allow me to walk like everyone else.
The operation is called a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR for short) and is performed at the St Louis Childrens Hospital in Missouri by Dr T S Park.
Dr T S Park is the neuro-surgeon in chief at St Louis and has been performing this operation for over 25 years in America to over 2000 patients with a 100% success rate.
The SDR will in no doubt change my life considerably, at the moment I am unable to walk without the use of a walking aid which you can see in my picture, I have to wear splints on both of my legs and some movements I struggle with. After the operation Dr Park says I should be walking independantly, be able to move freely and not have to wear the splints anymore. Daddy has attached my acceptance letter on the Operation page of this site so you can see how Dr Park thinks he can help me.
Mummy and Daddy need to raise £30,000 for the operation in America.
Following the operation I will require extensive physiotherapy to stretch my muscles that have become so tight over the past 3 years and to teach me how to sit, get up, stand, walk, jump, climb and everything else that other children do and that I have been doing differently for so long. My muscles will be very weak after the operation so I will also need lots of exercise.
its anticipated that I will require Physiotherapy 4-5 times a week for the first year and 3 times a week for the second year, I will aslo need some special equipment to help with my rehabilitation.
Mummy and Daddy will need to raise £15,000 for my aftercare we will be continuing to fundraise on our return to the UK
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my website.
Hayden
